Starting a blog is as easy as opening a WordPress account and logging in. Many people make it to this step and find themselves at a loss for what to do next. Beyond trying to figure out what their content will be, it’s important to come up with a vision of how you want the look and feel of your blog to be.
A blog’s design is just as important as what is inside of it. After all, you can make a cake that tastes better than any cake in the world, but if it just looks like a pile of flour, butter, eggs and milk, with no frosting, then you’re probably not going to be able to sell it. Good luck even getting the pigeons to eat it actually.
Don’t be afraid to take risks, but also don’t be too daring when you’re just starting out. As with any learning curve, it’s best to master the basics first before you start getting more advanced and taking bigger chances.
Here are some blog design tips for people that are just starting a blog for the first time and need a little helping hand figuring out the best design for your new project.
Create A Blog Title
First thing is first. What is your blog called and what is it about? Brainstorm on a few ideas that you like and propose them to your friends. Friends can be a great resource for choosing the best option. Sometimes our friends know us better than we know ourselves, and can be that objective opinion we’ve been lacking in making a decision.
Once you’ve decided on a blog title, have a thought on how you want the blog title to look. Will it be bold? Take a look at some different blogging how-to guides and see what your options are and how to achieve them.
Choose a Template / Color Palette
One of the great things about WordPress is that it comes with a lot of pre-made free templates for you to choose from if you don’t want to spend money on a template.
Some of these templates have basic settings that you can alter such as font, color palette, or header size and image. However if you want more control over the design of your template then you would have to purchase the template.
Usually the templates come at a small one time fee, and are done by professional designers. It is helpful to have a basic knowledge of HTML if you want to alter the design of your premade template.
You can find basic HTML information for free by doing a simple search on the internet.
